  • Ossabaw Island is one of Georgia’s largest barrier islands. It can only be reached by boat and has only a few residents, including Sandy West, the 98-year-old former owner of the island. Mrs. West sold the island to the state in 1978 as a Heritage Preserve, yet still lives there in her family’s historic home. “Who can stand in their front yard and feed eight donkeys?” Mrs. West asked laughing as the island’s donkeys approached her.
